When was it ever not one of these?

I prefer IRC, though. It's just that I can't actually convince any of my friends to use it.

Re: General Missingno Thread

I wasn't referring to you, I'm fully aware of how many known faces are on the DS channel.
It's the law of the new thing. Windows was first released in 1985 and people still use it despite of how shit it is.
IRC has one job (the matter of how integrated it has grown is a different subject) and has been doing it well since 1988.

Well that and the profound lack of gaming support for most other OSes.

I do nothing but game on linux.
For those games that refuse to make their code barely runnable through things like PlayOnLinux/Wine, I use a Windows KVM.
Ironically, Windows bound to a KVM runs way better than directly installing it to a disk.

Wine goes only so far. And not all older games are supported on modern windows systems, let alone different OSes altogether, programs or not..

Plus, if I'm going to go through the trouble of installing a virtual Windows just to play most of the games on my PC, I may as well just stick with Windows since that's what I'm mostly going to be using anyway.

It's October. I don't have anything interesting to say.

And when have I ever said you shouldn't? If you told me you don't have either the knowledge or hardware, fine, I can understand that. The former can be taught, the latter can be bought, but please don't give me the "I use Windows a lot more" thing because there's nothing a KVM can't do that a direct Windows installation can do. You just don't want to be inconvenienced and that makes you a Windows user. Not that it's a bad thing, simply stating a defining trait.
I personally prefer to "sandbox" Windows within a KVM for two reasons: a) I have the hardware to do it and b) I prefer to have fine-grained control over what goes out and comes into Windows from either the internet, locally and/or how it interacts with my hardware than I ever could if I installed Windows directly.
Also, you're kind of missing the point of using Wine/POL here: they're not magic wands you can just wave around chanting "make this game/app work", these tools are very bad emulators. If you don't care about the performance hit for any reasons (the aforementioned "you're bad at Linux") then by all means, go for it and run your stuff through these tools. The true "end game" is KVM with virtIO which, as mentioned, is ironically faster than Windows' native way of accessing disks. I also haven't lost any performance doing this, and passing the GPU directly to the host is just icing on the cake.

Re: General Missingno Thread

I thought this entire thing was about people using what was "new" and not what people were used to

It's October. I don't have anything interesting to say.

Re: General Missingno Thread

It is. Windows is more of the same repacked into "new" versions that people keep buying despite them adding no real features or control.
You can be used to something, but playing the lock-in game is purely a matter of choice. Most Windows users choose "things they're used to" because they do not want to be inconvenienced with learning new things.

Re: General Missingno Thread

For what it's worth I never stopped using 7. And before 7 I clung to XP until more and more games that I wanted to play required Vista or higher. Then I switched to 7 and I don't intend to stop until the same thing happens again, and by then I hope there's something better than 10.

It's October. I don't have anything interesting to say.
