Re: How to play yugioh

cards 1 to 4 stars can be summoned unless something with effect.  5 and 6 you need to kill 1 monster card to summon. 7 and 8 same but with 2. 9 and 10 same but with one more.   Magic and traps you can use any time you just need to know how to use them.

Obviously that's the power of the motorcycle.

like he even has most of the generic information wrong

7+ is only 2 tributes each for a normal summon, doesn't matter if its 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12

special summons can be regarding any level, not just 1-4

traps have to be set for a turn always unless text says otherwise
quickplay spells are the same way if you set them, but are effectively traps, as you can activate them on either turn, but have a higher spell speed than normal spells

the depth in ygo is p huge

Re: How to play yugioh

Playing a card game is much like building an RC car (that will kill other RC cars).  I use this analogy to explain how to play Sword Girls to people who don't have a clue how to make a decent deck.  Not everything translates as cut and dry from the explanation for SG but it's still decent.

1. The Cover
In comparison to silly card games, the skeleton is how well you minions work to provide cover life and how well they fit together will go a long way to determine how effective your deck is.  Every deck needs good protection and attacking power, and you want to balance this to create the right kind of shell.  You also want to use a balanced ratio of early game, mid game, and late game followers that will work together to fit on top of your engine.

2.  The Engine
This pertains to non-minion cards, such was spells, traps, and weapons.  With nearly any game and race, the spells and engine usually determine who has the more powerful vehicle (of destruction).  These also more than likely determine your win condition and will help you reach it the most efficiently.  Putting in spells that don't fit your win condition will lessen the strength of said win condition and if it isn't a card that will cover your flaws, it makes your deck weaker.

3.  The Fit
If your engine is too big for the cover or vice-versa, it's not going to be a very functional car.  Likewise, all competitive card games have a certain restriction preventing from you to burn through all your cards at once.  The key to a good deck is making sure your followers and spells work together while being able to maximize the restrictions to your advantage.

4.  The Controller
The car will only be as smart as the person controlling it.  Likewise, a deck is only as good as the person wielding it.  You can give the greatest deck in the world to somebody who barely knows how to play the game and they will lose to an inferior deck.  Play it smart.  Know your deck's weaknesses and limitations and work with what you got.  Unless there is a dire situation, your win condition calls for it, or your don't go balls deep a few turns in and wait to be countered by your opponent.

5.  The Paint Job
To me, this is the most important part of deckmaking.  This represents the play style of the deck and how much you enjoy it.  If you are using a great deck but it's bland and bores you to death, what is even the point of playing that card game if you aren't having fun?  A smooth-running deck is one thing, but ultimately, your fun is the only thing that matters.  I'd rather play with a fun but shit deck than a good but boring auto-win deck.  Of course, if winning is the only thing that matters than you might have more fun with that deck than anyone else so you like that paint job.

Deckmaking shouldn't be too hard if you study your deck in matches and listen to what it's asking you to do for it.  The most pain in the ass part of it is learning what most cards in the given game do and memorize the data on it so you remember which cards do what and think of combinations you think will be fun.  Also names.  Names are really important.  I was known in SG by my signature decks; which were named "The Bomber Deck", "The BBW Deck", and "The Buttplug Deck".  Each were feared by players both new and old.

A much simpler time, where you could pop in your whole extra deck in a turn and immediately surrender when "banish" cards were played
