Topic: Donjon CD Buyer's Guide to Akihabara [WIP]

同人音楽

Location: Akihabara, Chiyoda, Tokyo

Purpose of Guide: To provide a resource to assist donjon listeners with going on a CD shopping spree in Akiba.

Note: Input and expertise from other users is very much welcome!
Note: This post is a Work in Progress, I will edit as I have free time.

Locations (Alphabetical):
Akibaoo

  • About: Hidden gem in the basement of what appears to be just a hardware and electronics store from the ground floor. Decent selection of both Touhou and more general donjon albums at fair prices.

  • Location: Akibaoo B1F, back alleys on the left side of Chuo Dori near the train tracks, one of the many Akibaoo locations indicated by a bright red banner. Spiral staircase is in the back of the store past all the hardware components

K-Books

  • About:

  • Location: Radio Kaikan Building 3-4F

Mandarake Complex

  • About: Half of 6F is CDs, but I'm not sure if its all just commercial stuff. Will need someone to verify.

  • Location:

Melonbooks 1st Store

  • About: One of two Melonbooks branches. A lot of porn here. CD section is on the far left aisle. A bit limited selection-wise, but you may find what you're looking for.

  • Location: Left side of Chuo Dori under the Hirose Entertainment Yard (HEY) Arcade B1F. Entrance is a little weird to find at first, as you have to go through the first floor of the Arcade to find the staircase near the rear.

  • Map

Surugaya Akihabara Ekimae

  • About: One of three Surugaya branches. The other two carry Retro Video Games and Figures/Model Kits. Many shelves filled with CDs, the donjon stuff is near the cashier in the back. Rare stuff is in a glass shelf behind the register. Personally my favourite store for CDs, they offer a good selection, fair prices, and nice specials like buy 3 20% off, buy 5 30% off etc.

  • Location: Surugaya 2F. Next to Card World Tower facing the main road, at the rear of the building to the left of the large Radio Kaikan building near the JR Akihabara Station Electric Town exit.

  • Map

Toranoana Store A

  • About: One of three Toranoana Branches, all in the same vicinity. Other 2 locations mostly carry porn. 2nd floor has commercial CDs. 3rd floor carries stuff from the most recent events (C, M3, etc) and has it neatly organized. Has sections for older releases as well.

  • Location: Toranoana Store A 3F, on the right side of Chuo Dori. It's bright orange and sticks out like a sore thumb.

  • Map

Note: I can't think of anywhere in Ikebukuro or Nakano that has donjons, but if any of you do I'd be more than happy to broaden this out to all of Tokyo.

There are some expensive donjons for sale but you can find others in the 同人 section on their own shelf.
There's also many in a bin that only cost 100 yen each.

Re: Donjon CD Buyer's Guide to Akihabara [WIP]

Was in Japan last week and went to these places as well. Here's my take.

Ikebukuro does have doujin stuffs in the so-called 'Otome Street', which have one of the biggest Animate store in Japan. They have a fair share of doujin shops and branches and you can expect your usual Toranoana/Melon books etc. over there. Though they won't have anything particularly special (the best thing I found over there is Tsukishiro Hikari's Everything), You should really go there because it is actually quite an famous otaku spot.

Have you ever Heard of a store called "Tokyo Future Music"? They are located somewhere near the Ikebukuro Otome street and opens like 3 to 4 hours everyday (except Saturdays and Sundays where they would open for the whole afternoon). They sell some really, really obscure shit and indie stuff, like Hagall & 152Hz's New Album, HOTARU-YA's older works. They also have an in depth selection of ambient, noise and techno stuff. To top it all of, they are probably the only store that allow you to listen every CDs they sell before you buy it (and they have hot water, coffee and tea bags that are free, so that you can feel really cozy and actually listen to the album before you buy them), which I happily sit over there fore two hours before buying like 10K yen of stuff. you can find them on http://www.future-music.co.jp/

I think you miss Book-Off. Book Off are a series of shops that focus on cheap second-hand stuffs (like Suruga-ya) that include anything from CD to consoles. While their doujin collection are not particularly impressive (and they use the tag 'Internet Music' to generalize everything doujin related - very confusing IMO) and their organization is very, very messy, I do found wowaka's Unhappy Refrain for 750yen. They do have branches on Ueno, Akihabara, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku so you should really pay a visit because it's quite easy to find one. Especially if you do listen to Indie stuff, because their indie collections are really, really quite something.

Mandrake have two floors that have music. One of them sells doujin music and the other sells game music.

らしんばん should also be visited. it is located near Mandrake and their 2nd floor (or 3rd, because I am not very familiar with that store) have some doujin music stuff. With inflated price.

and finally my share of inflated price CDs on Suruga-ya:

I have no idea why actek's stuffs are so damn expensive. The 100K is probably some Sound Horizon's out-of-print CD, which is understandable. Some Chata, yuiko's stuff are really inflated. I think the most expensive CD I've brought is from here, which is Kamome Sano's 夏の星空 for something like 4.4K.
